Spring Fundraiser Totals $20,000 for Food for Montgomery + 100% Match!

In May 2021, GT dedicated our annual spring fundraising event to the Montgomery County Community Foundation’s “Food for Montgomery” campaign. Food for Montgomery is a public-private partnership that raises funds and devises strategies for hunger relief in the county.

Following a four-week fundraising drive that culminated in a GT “party” for members and friends on Zoom, Giving Together’s Emergency Fund for Individuals and Families in Crisis was able to award $20,000 to Food for Montgomery. That amount was matched 100% by major donors to the Community Foundation -- doubling the impact of GT's contribution.

Our dollars are critically important to our neighbors in need. Food insecurity was already a local crisis before the pandemic, with nearly 70,000 adults and children in Montgomery County going to bed hungry every night. Then COVID came along, upended the economy, and drove those numbers up to over 100,000 hungry people throughout the community. Fortunately, public agencies stepped up to create and help fund the Food for Montgomery initiative and the Community Foundation agreed to raise money from area philanthropies and individuals. Together with Montgomery County non-profits they're creating new ways to deal with food insecurity that will continue long after the current crisis fades away.

Giving Together members opened both their wallets and hearts to make GT's donation possible. The Food for Montgomery event follows last spring's wildly successful online fundraiser to benefit the Greater Washington Community Foundation's COVID-19 Response Fund and last fall's "A Different Season of Giving" fundraiser to benefit GT's four food-focused grantees. GT members can take pride in our determination to help our community during the COVID emergency. We're a small organization, but we do big things.
