MLK Day of Service at Becky's House
On January 20, 2020 -- the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Nationwide Day of Service -- Giving Together volunteers provided and served lunch to the 8 residents of Becky’s House. Becky’s House is one of the many programs sponsored by Interfaith Works, a prior GT grantee.
Becky's is a safe environment for eight senior, disabled women, many of whom have lived on the streets for decades with no place to go. The program provides case management and 24-hour staff, in order to improve the overall health and stability of these frail, higher-needs individuals. Each resident is given an ongoing service plan to optimize her independence. The residents enjoy field trips to movies, museums, and other outings.
On MLK-day, GT's volunteers brought a full lunch for the Becky's House residents. We set the table with flowers and condiments, prepared the food, and served it to the ladies. We also brought a simple gift package for each resident. After lunch our volunteers played bingo with them and awarded prizes.
According to new GT member Jodie Fine, "the ladies were lovely and really enjoyed our company. I think GT's food and conversation did a lot to brighten their day. Seeing them have such a nice time helped brighten my day too." The volunteers are pictured here, holding bingo cards and our certificate of appreciation from Interfaith Works.
