GT Volunteers on Martin Luther King Day
On Monday, January 21, 2019, a team of Giving Together volunteers braved the frigid cold to help out at Nourish Now, a 2016 GT grantee organization in Rockville, MD, on the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. We joined millions of Americans engaging in volunteer activities all around the country. Nourish Now helps people achieve food security in Montgomery County by efficiently re- distributing surplus food from restaurants, caterers, and others to those in need. The organization’s dedicated staff and corps of volunteers do an outstanding job of helping to alleviate local hunger – a serious problem in the county and throughout the metropolitan area.
On MLK Day, a dozen GT volunteers sorted produce and assembled food packages for Nourish Now’s client-families. Some also brought non-perishable food donations for the organization’s pantry. According to Brett Myer, Nourish Now’s founder and CEO, our group processed 500 bags of food, weighing 2,640 pounds. We worked hard throughout our shift and left with a feeling of real accomplishment.
